Last month, an original animation called “Basilisk” was uploaded to YouTube and picked up attention from internet users. The anime was created by Ami Thompson, a student at Sheridan College in Canada studying animation.
The movement of water in the anime is impressive and offers a close resemblance to Studio Ghibli’s works. The characters and creatures have an American and European cartoon feel. The influence of many cultures can be felt, and an air of statelessness drifts through each scene. The dark outcome and cynical twist are also impressive.
Ami Thompson worked as an intern at both Disney and Studio Ghibli and has personal experience both in America and Japan. One can see Thompson’s deep knowledge of Japanese anime, manga, and special effects shows through the illustrations she posts to her blog and Twitter. Her illustrations aren’t just created in a Japanese style, also noticeable are other styles influenced by cartoons and alternative comics. Various styles seem to have influenced her high quality art.
In addition to illustrations, on her blog, you can also see animations done during her time as an intern and 3DCG animation demos. Those who are interested in Thompson should definitely take a look.
“Basilisk” has received many comments of high praise on YouTube. The video has been widely introduced even in Japanese internet media and it has become widely talked about. Thompson has created a work with such high quality, it’s hard to imagine it is an independent work. We look forward to seeing even more from this talented artist.
