The TV anime The Flowers of Evil began broadcasting last month on Tokyo MX and other stations. The anime has picked up considerable attention for its use of a technique called rotoscoping that blends actual photography and animation.
Viewers are also shocked at the character designs for the anime, which are vastly different from those of the original manga. There is no doubt that The Flowers of Evil is one of the most talked about anime this season.
Aside from its visuals, the anime is also picking up attention for the music that colors the work. On May 22, the opening theme titled “The Flowers of Evil” created by the four-person band Uchujin will be released on CD.
Before the release of the single, the music video for the song was made available on King Record’s official YouTube channel. A portion of the music video uses that same rotoscoping technique as the anime. The story of the music video was inspired by the work’s atmosphere and characters. The video features a truly artistic aesthetic and visuals that fans will not want to miss.
Four versions of the theme song have been created and will be switched out throughout the anime’s broadcast. The CD single will feature all versions of the theme song as a musical suite sung passionately by vocalist Asako Shinosaki. The four versions of the song are themed after the main characters Kasuga Takao, Nakamura Sawa, Saeki Nanako, and the anime’s setting: Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture, respectively. All four versions are included on one disc. Furthermore, the CD’s jacket features a photo reminiscent of the anime. The cost of the CD single is 1,200 yen (includes tax).
The original manga for The Flowers of Evil, created by Shuzo Oshimi, is currently being serialized in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine (published by Kodansha). The TV anime is being directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, whose past work includes the TV anime Mushishi and the OVA Detroit Metal City, with Tetsuo Hirakawa as the assistant director. The anime is being produced by Zexcs, which is known for the recent work Suki-tte Ii na yo.
