The sci-fi robot anime Valvrave the Liberator has been picking up attention since it began broadcasting last month. Many may be wondering how the plan for this anime came about or what the highlights of the anime are. We have received comments addressing these questions from producers Hiroomi Iketani (Sunrise) and Hiroo Maruyama (MBS), who are the cornerstones of this anime’s production.
Iketani: There have been many instances at Sunrise in which I wanted to make a purely fun robot anime. This project started with those types of thoughts being gathered. Director Ko Matsuo is someone who has been in charge of other mecha productions like Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Depending on the characteristics of the work, there is a wide range of production methods when it comes to making mecha move. Even during dramatic moments, moving the characters very carefully leaves a very important impression on the sense of atmosphere of the scene. Various components were included in Makoto Ishiwata’s mecha designs. I requested that Ishiwata use designs that appeal to many different people, which was a big part of production. For this work, I wanted to make an animation that left people excited and wondering, “What kind of story will they tell next time?”
Maruyama: Appointing Katsura Hoshino as the character planner came about because many of the staff love her manga D.Gray-Man. Because she is writing a manga that can be enjoyed regardless of age or gender, I thought she would be able to create characters that matched the feeling of the work. Personally, the theme that I wanted to stress for this work concerned the point of wanting to depict a variety of humans. Because many characters are introduced, I’d be happy if viewers get excited about the work, finding both characters they like and characters they don’t. As much as possible, I recommend viewing the anime in real time.
