Book Report Contest Between Weekly Shonen Jump and Asahi Shimbun Begins

Manga are being used as the subject of a book contest?!

A joint book report contest between the Asahi Elementary School Student Shimbun and Weekly Shonen Jump has begun. The contest, which is also being held to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Weekly Shonen Jump, is targeted toward all elementary school children throughout Japan and is themed around manga, a first for this type of contest.

The premise of the contest is for elementary school children to write a book report on a manga of their choice from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. Works available for children to use include any currently serializing manga in Weekly Shonen Jump, such as One Piece, Kuroko no Basuke, and Naruto, as well as previous works that were serialized in the magazine, such as Dragon Ball.

The sponsors anticipate entries from elementary school children from all over Japan that contain a type of thinking and view of the works that adults just can’t fake. The winner of the contest will be able to receive a signed caricature by the manga artist of their favorite Jump work. The deadline for the contest is Sept. 7, 2013. The results will be published in the Weekly Shonen Jump issue that will go on sale on Oct. 28, as well as posted on their 45th anniversary site.
