“The Flowers of Evil” Episode 2 Recap

Look, when the lights of the town are gone,
The sun laughs at me
As it lays down to the horizon.
Look, the mountains that surround us
Abuse me with freezing mercilessness.
Treading on holy women’s robes,
I sell my soul to the devil.
That’s right, oh honest and upright citizens,
Don’t forgive me, I’ve fallen to sins.
I’ve never had a place to run to.
I shall make a pledge to my most beloved sin
In this strong prison.

The name of this work, The Flowers of Evil, comes from Charles Pierre Baudelaire’s poetry anthology that was published nearly 150 years ago. In this book, the poems follow the poet from his birth to his death, and it is very special to the protagonist, Kasuga Takao.

After school, in the empty classroom, Takao steals his classmate Saeki’s gym clothes. Were he found out, the world would end for him. Aware of his sin, he tries to confess, but in the end he can’t say it.

Then, Nakamura, the only person who knows about Takao’s crime, tells him, “Make a contract with me. You are going to lose something precious.”

The contract with the fearlessly laughing Nakamura comes into effect. Then, the bud of a decadent, voluptuous flower of sin appears before Takao.
