Asagaya Anime Street to be Created in “Anime Town” Suginami, Tokyo

The construction of Asagaya Anime Street in Suginami, Tokyo is currently being drafted! Although the official name of this street has yet to be decided, it’s development is still moving full-force ahead. On March 22, an official draft development plan for the street was revealed on the JR East Urban Development Corporation’s official site.

Within Japan, there more than 400 anime companies, but did you know that about 70 of them reside in Suginami? It’s in second place for the most companies right behind Nerima, where 79 companies reside. Suginami also has the Suginami Animation Museum where guests can learn more about various aspect of Japanese animation. Furthermore, the shopping district in front of the Kami-Igusa station in Suginami is home to a Mobile Suit Gundam statue referred to as the “Gundam Monument.”

Plans for the street include an overhead structure from Asagaya station until Koenji station on the Chuo Main Line. With the concept “a place only for those who create and those who watch” in mind, sci-fi, male-oriented, and female-oriented content is being prepared. There are also plans for anime-related events, shops, schools, and more to become part of the street.

Asagaya Anime Street is planned to open this December. If you are visiting Japan for New Year’s, be sure to stop by!
