Introducing “Mememe no Kurage,” Takashi Murakami’s First Work as Director

Mememe no Kurage, which has gathered attention as Japan’s world-renowned artist Takashi Murakami’s first movie, will be released on April 26 nationwide in Japan. The film is a story about adolescence that takes place in Japan after an earthquake. It has also attracted attention for being a fantasy that combines live filming with CG.

The story is about an elementary school student named Masashi who discovers a strange, jellyfish-like creature at his new house. As he and the creature gradually get closer, Masashi discovers that the students at his new school also bring mysterious creatures called “friends” to school.

On March 23, Murakami and the creator group participating in the movie got together and held an art event called “Roppongi Art Night.” Murakami gave us a glimpse into the strong feelings toward his work, saying, "The post-production is stuck at a really, really small part." He also gave voice to his worries regarding his first time as a director, a position he’s not used to: “It feels strange to give an announcement in an area other than art, and I’m uneasy of the reaction I will receive.”
