The Japanese doujin game circle Toraiki (stylized as TORaIKI) is using cloud funding to create an English version of one of its games. The target amount of funding has already been reached.
Using the funds, the group plans to translate the PC game 99 Spirits into English. The game is a Japanese-style RPG that was completed in May 2012. It features characteristic battles in which players have to find the true identity of enemies in order to defeat them. The company in charge of the English translation of the game is Fruitbat Factory.
The project was funded through the cloud funding site IndieGoGo. Depending on how much contributors supported to the project, special presents, including a soundtrack, previous games, and limited goods, were given out. Vastly exceeding their goal of $3,000, the funding brought in a total of $7,556.
Toraiki has become the first case in which cloud funding has been successfully used to expand doujin games overseas. It will be interesting to see if this method becomes more popular in the future.
