The Tekken series is one of largest franchises in the beat ‘em up game genre. The most recent instalment in the series, titled Tekken Tag Tournament 2 UNLIMITED, was recently used in the largest Tekken tournament, Master Cup 5. The tournament was held on Feb. 10 at Tokyo Leisure Land Palette Town.
Compared to the days of Tekken 5, the scale of the new games has been highly enlarged. Master Cup 5 is the largest tournament for the Tekken series, sporting huge, 5 on 5 team battles. In addition to the 625 players who participated as part of one of the 125 teams, challengers from South Korea and 2D beat-em-up game masters also participated. High-level matches ensued. Katsuhiro Harada, chief producer of the Tekken series, attended to cheer on the players, and the event was bustling with action from beginning to end.
The gamer group from Kanto called “Tokyo Hip-Hop Club” obtained the overall victory through fierce battles. During the final battle, the rival team “Specialist” had “Tokyo Hip-Hop Club” down to their last man. In a miraculous upset, the team’s final player obtained five consecutive victories, and won the tournament for his team, elevating them to the top of the Tekken world.
