Anime Movie “Hal” Becomes a Manga

On March 13, the serialization of a manga based on the anime movie Hal, which is being produced by Wit Studio, began. The first issue of the manga can be found in the supplemental “Betsuma TWO Vol. 9” of the Bessatsu Margaret April Super Extra Large Edition magazine. The manga tells a story that precedes the that of the movie.

Hal is a love story between a human and a robot set in Kyoto in the near future. Losing her beloved Hal in an accident, Kurumi loses her will to live. A robot version of Hal is sent to Kurumi to act as his replacement, and she begins slowly opening her heart up to him. The movie is slated to be released on June 8. The character designer for the movie is the shoujo manga artist Io Sakisaka, who is known for her past works Ao Haru Ride and Strobe Edge.

An illustration by the manga’s artist, Umi Ayase, has also been released to tie in with the announcement of the manga. The illustration features Hal and Kurumi back to back, with the feeling of their longing for each other pouring through.

Wit Studio, the studio in charge of the movie for Hal, is a new studio that was created in June 2012 by staff members from Production I.G. Another original project they are working on, Attack on Titan, will begin airing next month. Hal is the studio’s first movie.
