R18+ Version of “Berserk Golden Age Arc III: Descent” Debuts

An unusual trial has begun for the anime Berserk Golden Age Arc III: Descent, which was released on Feb. 1, 2013. R15+ (not viewable by those under 15) and R18+ (not viewable by those under 18) versions of the movie have been made. The movie was originally planned to be released with the R15+ rating, however, once the movie went through judging it was given an R18+ rating due to certain scenes. These scenes were ultimately taken out of the theatrical release so that the movie would pass with the R15+ rating.

Due to this, the R18+ version can be viewed as the actual “complete” version of the movie.
The R15+ version of the movie is playing in theaters throughout Japan. The R18+ version has also begun screening in theaters. However, this version is only playing at the Shinjuku Wald 9 and Umeda Wald 7 theaters. For those fans who want to see this “complete” version to compare it to the regular theatrical release, you will have to catch a showing at one of these two theaters.

On a side note, it wasn’t just the visuals that prompted the original R18+ rating, but also the music in one scene which featured a different version of the ending theme “breakthrough” sung by Kaname Kawabata of the band CHEMISTRY. For those who want to see the movie twice, we recommend seeing this version.
