Hugely Popular TV Anime “Space Pirate Captain Harlock” Returns in Movie Form!

A movie adaptation has been greenlit for the original work Space Pirate Captain Harlock, created by manga artist Leiji Matsumoto. Toei Animation plans to release the tentatively titled Captain Harlock in theaters this summer.

Original works have often received anime adaptations, but Captain Harlock will be a complete reboot of the series. For that reason, the films production costs have reached 30 million dollars. Even though Toei Animation has produced a number of epic anime movies, the production cost of this movie is the highest to date for the company.

A superb lineup of staff has been assembled for the film. The world-renowned director Shinji Aramaki is in charge of the film’s production and Fukui Harutoshi, known for having written many hit works, is in charge of the screenplay. Producer Ikezawa had this to say about the film: “The main market for this film is worldwide. The staff are all fighting to make this anime a worldwide contender representative of Japan.”

Currently, Captain Harlock is popular worldwide due to the anime from the ‘70s and ‘80s. In 2011, at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, Matsumoto and director Aramaki attended and reported on the film in front of more than 40 reporters. It’s safe to bet that the film won’t only open in Japan, but overseas as well.

Be sure to add Captain Harlock to your summer movie list!
