In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Macross, an event called “Super Dimensional Exhibition in Osaka” was held in Hirakata Park in Osaka from Dec. 22, 2012 to Jan. 14, 2013. Joining with the event, an augmented reality (AR) app called “Super Dimensional AR Macross - Osaka ver” was released on the iOS and Android.
The app allowed users to see an actual size SDF-1 Macross inside the park. Users were even able to see a 1200 meter long gigantic space battleship by holding their phones up to the sky. If that wasn’t enough, users were also able to see a 400 meter Macross Quarter. When users took a picture of an AR Macross and uploaded it to Twitter or Facebook, a firing button appeared on the screen that, when pressed, fired the main battery on the AR Macross. Being able to see an actual size Macross and Macross Quarter together was a great experience for fans.
