The current state of the anime industry is in an upward climb thanks to the success of many TV anime, social games, and events. The outlook for 2012 and beyond looks to be stable, and many companies have made public their corporate earnings for anime productions.
Leading the way in corporate earnings for 2012 was Toei Animation, which made a record high of 33 billion during its fiscal year, which ended in March. Current earnings being at a high of about 5.4 billion yen has also been a big topic. The anime industry is also boosting the achievements of companies whose works hold a high degree of familiarity and popularity achieved through diversification of efforts including TV broadcasts, character licenses from games, events, anime distribution, and more.
On the other hand, newly formed business are also gaining attention in the industry. Many people are expecting these new companies to produce works the likes of which have yet to be seen in the industry. Many new companies are emerging from staff at well established studios who have branched out to create their own. Evidence of this includes the 2012 works The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki by Studio Chizu and Kids on the Slope by MAPPA. Overlap, a newly formed company that branched off from Media Factory, was also very active in 2012.
Other new studios worth taking note of include IG Port, a new studio created by the young staff of Production I.G, as well as WIT Studio, which was established as a group within IG Port. The new companies are attempting new challenges while at the same time making use of long-established networks.
We can’t wait to see what kind of works will be born from these new companies as well as what part these companies will have in shaping the future of the anime industry.
