Since the announcement that two new Ghibli films, Kaze Tachinu and Kaguya-Hime no Monogatari, will be released simultaneously this summer, Ghibli has been talked about all over the place. The buzz around Hayao Miyazaki’s new work has been especially impressive. In a recent interview, Toshio Suzuki, a producer at Studio Ghibli, talked about the hotly anticipated new works.
Kaguya-Hime no Monogatari is being directed by Isao Takahata. The movie is Takahata’s first work since the 1999 film My Neighbors the Yamadas. It seems the work was born back in 2005. At first, the film was only planned to be a 30 minute short anime film, but when the story was completely fleshed out, the length jumped to three and a half hours. The actual movie won’t be this long, but its contents seem to be quite substantial. Even the director commented, “This may become my best work.”
Hayao Miyazaki is taking the reigns on Kaze Tachinu as the story writer, screenplay writer, and director, and Jo Hisaishi will be in charge of the musical composition. Regarding the voice cast, Miyazaki searched for “people who speak faster than others, have good enunciation, and plays each role gallantly.” From the staff to the cast, the work seems to be coming together beautifully.
