Robot anime has become a staple in the anime world, and the genre has become quite diversified. However, more than 20 years ago, the genre took the anime world by storm. Much of what makes the genre what it is today can be accredited to foundational series such as Mobile Suit Gundam and The Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.
Another foundational series is Cho Kosoku Galvion, which will finally be released as a DVD box set on July 26. Furthermore, it has been announced that a limited edition Blu-ray box set will also go on sale from Bandai Visual Club. This is the first time since the anime’s release almost 30 years ago that the anime will be released as a box set, meaning that this announcement is huge news for fans.
Cho Kosoku Galvion first began airing in 1984. The anime was directed by Akira Shigino, who also worked on the movie for Crayon Shin-chan. Other staff for the anime included Yoshihisa Tagami as character designer and Koichi Ohata as mechanical designer. Due to the talented staff, the anime was a huge hit. However, due to the anime’s main sponsor going bankrupt, the series only made it to 22 episodes. After that, the anime’s production company also went bankrupt. It is said that this is the reason why it has been so difficult to release the anime as a package.
The box set to be released in July will include all 22 episodes of the anime. However, since the anime was never finished, it’s hard to call it a complete set. Even still, for fans of robot anime, this is a great opportunity to take a peek at one of the first great series in the genre.
