Sword Art Online is the hit series of MMORPG-themed light novels from the pen of Reki Kawahara with illustrations by Abec.

In 2022, an online fantasy RPG known as Sword Art Online is released using the revolutionary NerveGear virtual reality equipment. However, players find themselves trapped within the game and discover from the creator, Akihiko Kayaba, that they must reach reach Floor 100 of the game’s castle and defeat the boss if they wish to be free. Dying in the game or removing the NerveGear equipment will result in death in the real world.

One of these players is series protagonist Kazuto Kirigaya, known as Kirito in the world of Sword Art Online. Inside the game he meets the heroine Asuna Yuuki but after returning to the real world he discovers she is still trapped in her NerveGear. Getting word that she was spotted in the World Tree in another game, Alfheim Online (ALO), Kirito, along with his cousin and fellow gamer Suguha Kirigaya (Leafa), sets out to rescue her and find out what’s really going on.
