Prinny Merchandise

Prinnies are those strange penguin-like creatures found in the world of Disgaea. Created by Takehito Harada, Prinnies each have a pair of peg legs and carry a little pouch which often stores weapons like bombs or knives, and when you throw a Prinny (which isn’t a very nice thing to do, by the way) it explodes!

It was revealed in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness that the reason they explode is because each Prinny is actually made when the soul of a human who has lead a worthless life is sewn into a Prinny suit. Because of the instability of these human souls, the Prinnies will explode when they hit something with force. Prinnies are supposed to wait around atoning for their previous lives by acting as servants, soldiers or slaves until such time as they have been properly redeemed and have undergone the Red Moon ritual.

However, there is a more cheerful place for Prinnies known as Prinny Land where Prinnies can roam free and do not explode when thrown! That said, there is also the Land of Carnage which is filled with Prinnies who have turned to the dark side and live only for battles.

The humble Prinny has now become a mascot character for software publisher Nippon Ichi and appears in many of their games outside of the Disgaea series. They have even headlined their own game, Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?, as well as appearing on all kinds of merchandise from plushies to keychains. Prinnies - you’ll always be heroes in our hearts!
