Since beginning its serialization in Kodansha’s Afternoon in 1988, Hitoshi Iwaaki’s science fiction horror manga Parasyte has received live-action films and an anime adaptation, Parasyte -the maxim-, directed by Kenichi Shimizu and written by Shoji Yonemura through the studio Madhouse.
It follows the young protagonist Shinichi Izumi. He falls asleep one night with his earphones in when creatures called Parasites appear on Earth intending to take over the brains of human hosts. When one such Parasite tries to take over Shinichi, he finds himself unable to get around the earphones and ends up in Shinichi’s right hand. He is thus named “Migi,” Japanese for “right.”
They form a symbiotic relationship, working together to protect each other from other Parasites attempting to eat Shinichi’s still intact brain.
