Later adapted into the hit TV anime Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse, Muv-Luv began as an adult visual novel released for the PC. The game is divided into two parts beginning with the dating sim style Muv-Luv Extra in which the hero Takeru Shirogane wakes up next to heiress Meiya Mitsurugi just as his childhood friend Sumika Kagami arrives to wake him up.

The second part, Muv-Luv Unlimited, takes the form of a mecha-themed adventure in which aliens called the “BETA” have invaded Earth. In the sequel, Muv-Luv: Alternative, Takeru wakes up three years later but discovers he’s been sent back in time right before the events of Unlimited. The TV anime series adapts the Total Eclipse light novels which take place within the Unlimited timeline and follow the adventures of Yuuya Bridges and Yui Takamura as they battle the invading BETA.
