Lupin the Third is the classic manga created by Monkey Punch which focuses on the titular Lupin and his amusing antics as a gentleman thief. Lupin III is also the Japanese grandson of Arséne Lupin - the hero of the classic novels by Maurice Leblanc.
The series follows Lupin as he commits audacious acts of theft preceded by a polite calling card to the owners of his next target announcing his intentions. Lupin is aided by his friend Daisuke Jigen - an ace sharpshooter, and Goemon Ishikawa XIII - a master swordsman and traditional samurai, as well as occasionally being frustrated by frequent love interest, Fujiko Mine. During each of their complex heists, the gang are trolled by the bumbling Japanese police officer now working for Interpol (ICPO), Kouichi Zenigata.
Lupin III became a much-loved TV anime through the ‘70s which featured contributions from Hayao Miyazaki himself who went on to helm the animated feature The Castle of Cagliostro and has since received several more TV anime outings including 2012’s Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and Lupin Part 4 in 2015.
