Written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, Death Note is a hugely influential manga which was later adapted into a popular TV anime by Madhouse as well as a live-action TV drama and three live-action movies: Death Note, Death Note 2: The Last Name, and L: Change the World starring Tatsuya Fujiwara and Kenichi Matsuyama, as well as Death Note: Light up the New World starring Masahiro Higashide, Sosuke Ikematsu, Masaki Suda, and Erika Toda released in 2016.
The story begins when top student Light Yagami comes across the Death Note—a notebook which kills anyone whose name is written inside—after it is dropped by the bored Shinigami Ryuk. Light is filled with a desire for a “just” world in which only the righteous are allowed to survive and uses the Death Note to execute criminals and those he believes do not deserve to live. Light eventually becomes known by the nickname Kira, inspired by the English word “killer.”
After the spate of mysterious deaths attracts the notice of Interpol, the world-famous detective L is put on the case. However, his mission is frustrated by another Death Note carrier, top model Misa Amane, and her Shinigami Rem. The battle between light and dark is only just beginning...
