In a far distant future, the Earth has been ravaged by meteorites and nearly all life has been destroyed in the process. Now all that remains of the land is a single coast where over time a new race of sentient lifeforms has emerged. But instead of flesh and bone, these new lifeforms, known as Houseki (Gems), are made of living crystals and are able to live in the now toxic world. However, the Gems are under threat by a race of moon people called the Lunarians who hunt them for their value.

That is until they are tasked with the mission of creating a natural history encyclopedia.
