This unusual collaboration between the Ukiyo-e Project and the rock band KISS aims to save ukiyo-e, the traditional Japanese art of woodblock printing, from disappearing from our world by giving work to the artisans involved in the creation process: Illustrators, wood carvers, and hand printers.

This piece was inspired by a classic by Kuniyoshi Utagawa titled "Token Gonbei, Kuniyoshi Moyo Shofuda Tsuketari Genkin Otoko" (Men of Ready Money with True Labels Attached, Kuniyoshi Style).

Illustrated by Masumi Ishikawa, carved by Kazuo Watanabe and Yusuke Sekioka, and hand-printed by Hideo Yoshida and Takuya Okada, it features Paul Stanley holding a mirror and wearing a kimono with a jigoku-ezu (inferno) pattern which hides the three other members: Gene Simmons as the "Great King Yama" and Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer as ogre. You can discover the members’ makeup on Stanley’s obi depicted as family crests and the kanji from Eric Singer’s outfit on the towel over his shoulder.

The poem on top is actually the Japanese translation of the lines, “I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day You keep on shouting, you keep on shouting” from "Rock and Roll All Night" (1975). You can choose a version signed by the band members or one without a signature. In any case, this amazing piece is helping save this elaborate art form!
