Pikachu's Creator Explains Its Original Final Evolution!

Pikachu's Creator Explains Its Original Final Evolution!

Did you know that iconic Pokémon mascot Pikachu was originally supposed to have another evolution after Raichu?

In a recent interview with key staff members of the very first Pokémon games, graphic artist Nishida Atsuko revealed that she had also actually designed a third evolution for Pikachu. Named Gorochu, the electric mouse took on a more fearsome appearance with protruding fangs and a devilish pair of horns. However, the design was eventually scrapped, leaving only Pikachu and Raichu (and later Pichu).

Other interesting and unexpected details about the creation of Pikachu were also revealed. As the mascot of the series, Pikachu is regarded as one of the cutest Pokémon, but a lot of the design choices were chosen at random. For instance, did you know that the first drafts Nishida made for Pikachu were based off of daifuku?

Or perhaps you were curious about the stripes on its back? According to Nishida, those were added because Trainers are forced to look at Pikachu’s back during battle, and it looks pretty empty without anything there.

There’s a lot of buzz around the interview and its revelations, but if anything, this has made us love Pikachu all the more. Here's to many more years of Pikachu and all the rest of our Pokémon buddies!
