The Best of April Fools’ Day Jokes: Otaku Edition

Our favorite shows and games love teasing us on April Fools’ Day, and this past year was no exception with some great pranks. Even if you don’t fall for them, so many of these make us wish they were true…!

Masamune-kun no Revenge
The Masamune-kun’s Revenge anime finished airing in March, but we were teased with one last surprise: a live-action adaptation!

The official site was updated with a visual featuring actresses as Aki and Yoshino! They recreated the scene where Yoshino holds Aki’s face, and their wigs look amazing~ (It wouldn’t be complete without another image of Aki eating, too!) It also mentions a Feb. 31, 2019 release date for the film.

Chaos;Child
5pb just released the spin-off Chaos;Child Love Chu Chu!! on Mar. 30, but they’re apparently already working on their next project! They announced a BL game adaptation of Chaos;Child on Twitter for April Fools’ Day.

The tweet included an intimate illustration of Miyashiro Takuru and Itou Shinji~ At least we have Love Chu Chu!! to enjoy!

Detective Conan
It looks like even the great Detective Conan can have his Twitter account compromised! The great detective of the west, Hattori Heiji, got into the official Twitter account and changed logos on the official site to say “Detective Heiji” instead of “Detective Conan.”

They went ham with this one. Comic covers were changed to feature Heiji, and even the opening and ending themes of the anime were changed for the day!

Maybe not as heartbreaking as a fake announcement of a new show, but this was one of those pranks that makes you realize you want something you didn’t even know you wanted! (Actual Heiji spin-off please?)

Rejet Friends
Rejet makes a ton of popular otome games, and many of their characters have stolen the hearts of their fans!~ They messed with us on April Fools’ with an illustration teasing a new game: Reject Friends.

The illustration featured a lot of their characters in animal forms! This one was a parody of Kemono Friends.

Fate/Grand Order
The smartphone game Fate/Grand Order has been quite a hit since it came out, and they had a big announcement for anyone signing in on the first: a new game where you can go around catching monsters called Fate/Grand Order Gutentag Omen!

Yeah, that’s right. F/GO: GO... sound a little familiar? This perfect Pokémon Go parody was actually released for the full day before they closed it. They were seriously committed to the joke this year!

Bungo Stray Dogs
The cast of Bungo Stray Dogs are going back to school again this year with the hilarious return of Bungo-tachi no Gakuen Seishun Graffiti!

The released illustration announces an entirely new Bungo Stray Dogs series, and the author even released artwork of each character complete with descriptions of their roles!

Dragon Ball Super
Goku is off to work for the new “Social Survival Arc” of Dragon Ball Super!

Each character was given special roles for the Dragon Ball company. Goku, Vegeta, and Krillin are new recruits, Gohan is a trainer, Piccolo works in HR, everyone’s favorite Turtle Hermit is a chief clerk, Boo is in PR, Tenshinhan deals with client relations, Grand Priest is the president, Omni-King is the chairman, and Androids 17 and 18 do business with them as employees of the Gero Corporation!

Thunderbolt Fantasy x Touken Ranbu
A collaborative short film was released that paired these two fan favorites. At first it’s just the protagonist of Thunderbolt Fantasy, but Mikazuki Munechika appears and the two fight. (These two characters are voiced by the same person, Kosuke Toriumi!)

According to the video we’ll have to wait until 2205 for the collaborative Thunderbolt Fantasy x Touken Ranbu drama!

Osomatsu-san
Everyone was excited to see the hilarious Matsuno brothers as adults when Osomatsu-san was released, but it’s getting even better. The cast of the TV drama Byplayers announced on April Fool’s that they would be playing the Matsuno brothers 30 years after Osomatsu-san in a live-action movie. (We want this to be true, too - it would be hilarious!)

Maybe we’ll get lucky and one or two of these will turn our April Fools’ Day dreams into a reality!
