Docomo Anime Store Presents Top Anime of 2016 Divided into Six Categories!

Docomo Anime Store, Japan’s biggest anime streaming service, held a survey between Dec. 22, 2016 and Jan. 6, 2017 with more than 4,800 users participating. The survey included six different categories and featured only anime distributed at Docomo Anime Store. Scroll down to find out the most popular shows of the year!

Yuri!!! on Ice takes the crown as the “Favorite Anime of 2016,” and it’s also the only show that made it into the top 10 in all six categories. Yuri!!! on Ice follows Yuri, a young figure skater who considers quitting after his crushing defeat at the world championship, but instead goes on to grow through various encounters and stands to face the championship once more. It depicts the world of male figure skating so appropriately that it received the approval of famous figure skaters from different countries. Following in second and third place are Re:Zero and KonoSuba, which were also popular in other categories.

The anime most fans want to rewatch from the start is Re:Zero! High school student and ardent gamer Natsuki Subaru is suddenly summoned to another world, where he acquires the ability of “Return by Death” that enables him to rewind time by dying. The story gained popularity with its unpredictability, so it comes as no surprise that it also got the second place of the “Most Captivating” category. Yuri!!! on Ice and KonoSuba got quite a few votes in this category as well.

Yuri!!! on Ice collects its second crown as the most moe anime of the year with New Game! and Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru as second and third runners-up. The unique characters and their relationships coupled with breathtaking figure skating earned it the love of many (mostly female) fans.

The anime that kept most viewers on their toes in 2016 is none other than the third season of Haikyu!!, followed by Re:Zero and Yuri!!! on Ice! After winning their way all the way up to the finals of the Spring High Tournament, the Karasuno High School Volleyball Club find themselves against the reigning champion, Shiratorizawa Academy. Docomo Anime Store is currently distributing the first two seasons as well as a compilation.

If only it was that easy! Of course, you can’t really have a fun anime list without Osomatsu-san, which came in second, followed by The Disastrous Life of Saiki K..
