In case you haven’t heard, Gintama is becoming a live-action movie! The production team have already released a fair few images of the high profile cast including Oguri Shun who will be playing Sakata Gintoki, Suda Masaki as Shimura Shinpachi, Hashimoto Kanna as Kagura, and Okada Masaki as Katsura Kotaro, but now you can catch your first glimpse at Nagasawa Masami as Shinpachi’s older sister Otae and Tsuyoshi Muro as the inventor Hiraga Gengai.
Set in a parallel universe, Gintama is an Edo-era science fiction tale in which aliens have suddenly invaded feudal Japan. Mixing sci-fi and jidaigeki elements, Gintama is filled with human emotion, laughs, and exciting action sequences. The trailer for the live-action version was released via the official Twitter feed on New Year’s Day and has been viewed over 1.5 million times with the cast’s New Year’s greeting video also receiving over 5 million views!
Nagasawa Masami’s Otae is seen in a pink kimono and with her hair in a ponytail, holding a shopping bag in her hands and smiling kindly, contrasting nicely with her hidden strength which often sends Gintoki and the others flying in the manga. You’ll just have to wait until the movie comes out to witness how the well-known actress will play this surprising aspect of her character.
Tsuyoshi Muro will be playing the Edo era’s number one inventor, Hiraga Gengai, closely trusted by Gintoki and co. when it comes to awesome gadgets. In the manga he’s a little older, but the director always wanted to cast Tsuyoshi Muro in the role. Talking about the publicity shots, the actor jokingly said that he thinks the bald head and beard look kind of suits him and he’s thinking of adopting it in the future!
There are still plenty of characters from the manga appearing in the film which haven’t yet been unveiled so keep your eyes open for all the latest information!!
