Pre-orders for a The Rose of Versailles x Noritake Oscar & André Wedding Tea Cup & Saucer Set (21,600 yen; tax included, shipping and handling separate) from Bandai’s Life Division opened on Premium Bandai on Dec. 22.
■ About the Set
This set was released as a collaborative item commemorating the 45th anniversary of Riyoko Ikeda’s manga The Rose of Versailles (also known as La Rose de Versailles) in 2017 with the high-quality manufacturer Noritake, and it includes two teacups and saucers.
This series follows protagonist Oscar, a beautiful woman disguised as a man, and André, her orderly despite them being childhood friends. Their feelings grow over many months and years, and eventually Oscar whispers to André, “Our wedding will come once this war is over,” but their story meets a sad end because of the violent war, and they never have their wedding ceremony.
This teacup and saucer set captures a happy wedded life between the pair. Perfect for wedded couples in their 30s, they have very calm designs.
Colors
The cream color inspired by Oscar captures both the sublime white rose she is associated with while also bringing to life the growing femininity Oscar has after marrying. André’s characteristic deep blue hints at how strong his feelings for Oscar run, despite his calmness, and you can feel his broad-mindedness.
Cups
The sides of the cups feature the main characters’ initials, “O” and “A,” inside a sword revealing a crest and laurel wreath, capturing how they’ve fought alongside each other and supported each other since they were children. The rims have stretched forms, resembling large roses. The gold rose and ribbon symbolize their strong bond and many years of happiness, completing these items that would be wonderful for tea time.
Saucers
When you lift your cup, you’ll see “La Rose de Versailles” written out and a rose symbolizing the work nearing the edge, blessing the wedding of these two. A heart appears nonchalantly in the center, hidden when your cup is set down, symbolizing the long time it took them to find the person closest to them and their deep affection.
