Curtains Finally Rise on Hyper Production Engeki Haikyu!!: Karasuno, Fukkatsu!

Curtains rose on Hyper Production Engeki Haikyu!!: Karasuno, Fukkatsu! on Oct. 28.

This stage performance is based on the volleyball manga Haikyu!! that has more than 20 million copies printed and an anime adaptation which entered its third season in October. Karasuno, Fukkatsu! (or Revival) was first performed in November 2015 and was performed again in April 2016. Five schools make an appearance including Karasuno, Nekoma, Date Tech, Tokonami, and Aobajosai High School. In addition to the cast from the series’ earlier works, new cast members were carefully chosen through audition, and the cast now includes 29 different people performing on stage.

Watch as the members of Karasuno grow through their fated “Battle at the Trash Dump” against Nekoma, as well as the interhigh preliminaries, all brought to life through passionate and original performances and the latest video technology. Fans will also enjoy the teamwork amongst the cast, as well as how carefully each character was recreated.

After finishing in Tokyo, this show will move on to Iwate, Fukuoka, and Osaka. It will then return to Tokyo from Dec. 1-4 for an encore. There will be a live-viewing at movie theaters in all 47 of Japan’s prefectures for the final performance on Dec. 4.

Comments were collected from the director and eight cast members after the dress rehearsal on opening day, which you can enjoy below.

Comments from Director and Cast

Worry Kinoshita (Director):
“I think that everyone can relate to this work. There are parts of the fun and passion of school clubs that everyone in Japan can and cannot relate to, and I hope that everyone enjoys the play and thinks to him or herself, ‘wow, plays are fun.’”

Kenta Suga (Karasuno High, Hinata Shoyo):
“I said last time how that was the most I had ever moved around on stage in my life, but I did even more this time. The play is even more intense, and I think that the power of the original manga has been brought to the stage. Hyper Production has leveled up their game, as well. There will be 36 more performances, and I want to keep working hard. I hope everyone supports us.”

Tatsunari Kimura (Tobio Kageyama):
“There’s a lot of time between the first performance and the final encore, and as I face Tobio Kageyama, I feel like Haikyu!! is becoming an even bigger part of my life. I want to treasure each and every hour I get to spend performing as a member of Karasuno High School."

Takato Nagata (Kenma Kozume):
“Kenma Kozume is kind of a dark and quiet part, so I was worried about how I’d portray that on stage. I hope that I do well with expressing his character to everyone. The theme of Nekoma High is connections. I want to do my best to carry that with me.”

Shori Kondo (Tetsuro Kuro):
“I play the Nekoma High captain, Tetsuro Kuro, so I want to bring out my inner captain, polish how I hit the ball, and win against Karasuno. Thank you for all of the support.”

Sho Arai (Takanobu Aone):
“I think people who are familiar with the original work will be surprised at how I play Aone. I want to put my all into delivering this performance so that everyone enjoys that surprise. I want to stand strong against Karasuno as their greatest villain once they level up from their battle with Nekoma.”

Atsushi Kimura (Kenji Futakuchi):
Haikyu!! can be hard work, but what we’ve all put together is very much a play. Playing a number of roles is also a new challenge for me. I’m counting on you, everyone.”

Hiro Matsuda (Hayato Ikejiri):
Karasuno, Fukkatsu! is about Karasuno’s come-back, and it tells the story of what kind of comeback that is. I hope that everyone will also look forward to seeing who’s playing a role on the other side of that.”

Kosuke Asuma (Toru Oikawa):
“I hope that we can bring on some good pressure as Aoba Josai. I’m also working hard for my roles aside from Oikawa. I want to keep on running without any injuries through the final performance.”
