Based on the popular light novel published under Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko, Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale will be opening nationwide in spring 2017. It’s now also been revealed that Skydance, an American company which manages a wide variety of entertainment media, purchased the rights to create a live-action adaptation with support from Kadokawa.
Sword Art Online has had a number of adaptations including a manga, anime series, and video games, and 2017’s Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale will be its first film. This new TV series, though, will be the first live-action adaptation and will follow the original story.
The pilot episode was written by Laeta Kalogridis who also worked on Avatar, Shutter Island, and Terminator Genisys. In addition to the TV series, Skydance also has plans to set up a Sword Art Online VR experience! (Uh-oh!)
In response to this news, comments from author Reki Kawahara, screenplay writer Laeta Kalogridis, and Skydance Media CEO David Ellison have been released.
