An exhibit of works by Yoshitaka Amano, the well-known character designer of the Final Fantasy series, titled “Yoshitaka Amano Exhibition: The Evolving Fantasy” will be held at the Yurakucho Asahi Gallery from Jan. 29 to March 8. Hurriedly before the exhibit opens, it has been confirmed that works themed after the legendary late British rockstar David Bowie will be on display.
At the exhibit, more than 100 works by Yoshitaka Amano will be gathered, from nostalgic masterpieces to his newest fine art series, Candy Girl. At Amano’s first solo exhibit held at Yurakucho Mullion, and even now, he pursues the path of fantasy and the worlds of his creations that continue to evolve.
Tribute works to David Bowie, who passed away at the age of 69 on Jan. 10, 2016, will also be on display at the exhibit. The works are part of a series themed after Bowie that was commissioned by American magazine V Magazine in 2004. He left a tremendous influence not only on the rock world but also in the art world, so the collaboration was a natural one. Seeing Bowie drawn in Amano’s fantastical yet detailed touch is wondrous.
In other news, a panel with Amano will be held at the Yurakucho Asahi Square on Feb. 1. Amano will discuss in his own words his impressions on his work, including the hidden stories surrounding the birth of the many characters he has created to date. Tickets to the panel will be distributed at the exhibit venue beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 29. Be sure to check out the exhibit along with the panel.
