Director Tetsuro Araki’s Original Anime “Kotetsujo no Kabaneri” Broadcast Slated for April 2016, PV Released

Well-known director Tetsuro Araki of Death Note and Attack on Titan fame has joined forces with Ichiro Okouchi of Planetes and Code Geass fame on an original TV anime. Kotetsujo no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress), which gained massive attention during fall 2014’s “Noitamina Project Press Conference 2015,” has been slated to begin broadcasting in April 2016.

Along with this news the staff was also announced. As confirmed in previous reports, directing is Tetsuro Araki, and it’s been revealed at this time that Ichiro Okouchi is the series composer and scriptwriter. On the other hand, a big surprise is that Haruhiko Mikimoto is the character designer. A veteran well known from Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Mobile Suit Gundam 0080, Mikimoto is participating in this newest challenge from director Araki. Credited as animation character designer and chief animation director is Yasuyuki Ebara. Another important member of staff is musician Hiroyuki Sawano who has worked on such anime as Attack on Titan and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. Wit Studio of Attack on Titan fame is handling production. This lineup is likely to raise fan anticipation.

The “steampunk survival action” story of Kotetsujo no Kabaneri is set on an island nation called Hinomoto after the development of the steam engine. There, fighting has continued between human survivors and zombies called “Kabane” that have steel hearts, and boys and girls fight against the Kanabe aboard armored steam locomotives and armored fortresses. One such boy, a steamsmith named Ikoma, develops on his own a weapon for defeating the Kabane called “Tsuranuki Zutsu” and awaits the day when he can show off his power. Then a girl who calls herself Mumei (Nameless) appears.

A cast of popular and talented voice stars are participating on the anime, including Tasuku Hatanaka as main character Ikoma, and Sayaka Senbongi as the heroine Mumei (Nameless), plus Maaya Uchida, Toshiki Masuda, Yuki Kaji, Kanae Oki, Mariya Ise, Ryota Osaka, Kensuke Sato, and Mamoru Miyano.

Though the broadcast won’t be until April, a PV has been created that offers the chance at a first look. A special prequel movie will also be released for a one-week period across Japan starting on Friday, March 18, 2016. A stage greeting event with the cast will also be held on Saturday, March 19 to raise excitement for the April broadcast. Advance tickets to the event are on sale now through Ticket Pia.
