The newest chapter of Konami’s Metal Gear series, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (¥9,072 including tax), will be released in Japan on Sept. 2. Just before the release date, Sony has revealed a brand new commercial titled “A Sheltered Daughter’s Tearful Wedding,” which shows the wedding ceremony of a couple sheltered within cardboard boxes. Broadcasting of the commercial started on TV from Aug. 31.
In the commercial, cardboard boxes cover the bride and her father as they make their way down the aisle. It would be at least a little more acceptable if only one of them hid in the box as a way to show respect to Solid Snake, but having both of them do so at the same time is just incredible. Even the flashbacks to childhood memories and school entrance ceremonies show the characters underneath their boxes. The amount of respect this family has for Solid Snake is just too much!
Upon closer investigation, it turns out that the mother is free from cardboard box stealth techniques. Does this mean the habit is an inheritable trait? The groom who met the bride through Metal Gear also has a box over his head though…
Although we don’t know exactly what they are hiding from, the characters continue to wear their cardboard boxes as the story progresses. The bride goes on to thank her father for teaching her so many lessons from Metal Gear Solid over the past 28 years. Just when things become touching, the bride switches gears and states that she has yet to learn about Metal Gear’s greatest mystery. In response, the father bursts out from his cardboard cover, and delivers a very special message to the newlyweds. The commercial closes out with text that reads “You’ve waited for 28 years!”
The mystery of why Snake (Big Boss) turned towards the dark side, and what Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will teach us about the mystery, are themes that fans are all looking forward to. It would also be kind of nice to know what happens to the cardboard couple as well.
