Anna Sui, who has continued to be showered in attention in the fashion world for her abundance of creativity, has joined with the pop culture Japan sends to the world. Handbag maker Kuipo, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, has begun selling collaboration items full of entertainment value titled “Anna Sui 7 Manga.”
With approval from top manga artists in Japan, 24 items including bags, wallets, and pouches themed after manga characters with attention paid to Anna Sui’s art style were made for the project. Highlights include their high level of design and high practicality.
The lineup of series participating in the collaboration is astounding. The seven series are: Riyoko Ikeda’s The Rose of Versailles, Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura, Osamu Tezuka’s Unico and Princess Knight, Mineo Miya’s Patalliro, Akiko Higashimura’s Princess Jellyfish, and Ai Yazawa’s Paradise Kiss. Being popular manga supported by such broad audiences, all these works are so common everyone has likely seen them at least once.
The tote bag has a delightful-looking design that’s easy to use and allows for the option of folding it for use as a clutch bag. The manga wallet combines in its design visuals from manga. It is largish in size and can fit a passport, and it can also be held in a clutch bag style. A selling point is that it can easily add style when coordinated with an everyday bag or T-shirt, perhaps making a stylish, accented look possible. From the point of view of today’s fashion trends, this is an item you can’t miss out on.
Anna Sui 7 Manga products will be available for a limited time at pop-up stores in Japan. The first is open from May 15 (Fri.) to 28 (Thurs.) in Laforet Harajuku. The next will be open from May 20 (Wed.) to 31 (Sun.) in Nagoya Parco, and items will also be for sale in Shibuya Hikarie from May 20 (Wed.) to June 10 (Wed.). After this time the items will be on sale in a portion of stores for about a year. A list of stores can be found on the campaign’s site.
Also throughout the duration of sales, the “Anna Sui 7 Manga Hashtag Campaign” will be ongoing. Fantastic presents will be given by lottery to those who use the special photo booth inside the pop-up stores, hashtag the photos “#annasui7manga” and upload them to Instagram or Twitter. Subculture idol group Yumemiru Adolescence (YumeAdo) is also backing 7 Manga. The group appears on the special campaign site created by Anna Sui 7 Manga and magazine Switch trying out the items. We’ve also heard that a 1-day-only YumeAdo event will be held sometime when the pop-up store in Laforet Harajuku is open. Things are heating up on many levels.
