There’s going to be a Hana Yori Dango musical. You too could be Tsukushi?! Auditions are being held

Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers), the shoujo manga which is tremendously popular the world over, is going to become a musical. Performances will begin in January 2016.
Also, it’s been revealed that the role of the story’s heroine, Tsukushi Makino, will be decided through open audition. It seems likely to create quite a stir.

Hana Yori Dango is the popular manga by Yoko Kamio which was published in Shueisha’s Margaret from 1992 to 2004. The best selling shojuo manga in history with a total of 61 million copies sold, the series remains popular even now.

Hana Yori Dango has been adapted into TV dramas in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, earning high viewership figures, but this is the first time it will become a musical, and the driving forces of the Japanese theater and music worlds have all come together in its creation.

The script for the musical has been written by Gou Aoki, who has received high acclaim for his work on Hakkenden and Natagirimaru among many others. Also, Yumi Suzuki, who has worked on such diverse projects as Takarazuka Boys and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, receiving numerous theatrical awards, will direct. Akimitsu Honma, who’s worked with such high profile artists as Porno Graffitti and Ikimono-gakari, will compose the score. A true dream team have come together to create what looks to be the best possible musical production.

For this musical in which such a first rate creative team have come together, it’s been decided the role of the heroine, Tsukushi Makino, will be cast through open audition. Applications are open to actresses aged 15 to 25, professional or amateur. They’re looking for girls with the confidence to brightly and energetically sing “I Am Tsukushi!”
