‘Ghost in the Shell: Arise’ TV Series with Brand New Episodes to Air from April

Ghost in the Shell: Arise, the tetralogy released between 2013 and 2014, takes a fresh turn: A TV series titled Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture will start airing from April 5 on Tokyo MX. It will be broadcast on BS11 as well.

Ghost in the Shell: Arise depicts the young days of Motoko Kusanagi and the members of Public Security Section 9. The series was well received. It shows a different face of Motoko, making it a must-see for fans.

As the “Alternative Architecture” in the title of the series suggests, it takes up a different composition containing both rearranged parts of the tetralogy and brand new additions. All four episodes of the tetralogy will be rearranged into two episodes each, and the flow of episodes will be altered as well, in accordance with the initial proposal of series composer Tow Ubukata. Two new episodes will also be added to the storyline, and these are connected to the new Ghost in the Shell movie scheduled to release in early summer 2015. This also means Arise, Arise - Alternative Architecture, and The New Movie can be regarded as three parts of the same huge, overarching project. The TV series might also give us hints about the movie, the contents of which are shrouded in mystery at present.

The story centers on the eve of the formation of Public Bureau Section 9. It becomes clear that young Motoko Kusanagi established the group. In 2027, cyberbrain crimes are peaking, when Major Motoko Kusanagi, a member of Organization 501, appears before Daisuke Aramaki of Internal Public Security Section 9, who envisages the establishment of an “offensive” special force. Motoko is a cyborg who went through full body cyberization before she was born, and she possesses both super-class-A hacking skills and excellent cyborg maneuvering technology. Motoko is getting closer to the cyberbrain virus “Fire Starter” lurking in the shadows of the case...

Animation production will be handled Production I.G, whose name is already familiar from the tetralogy. Kazuya Kise is acting as both supervising director and character designer, and series composition is in the hands of Tow Ubukata, while Cornelius will compose the music for the series. Such a promising staff is sure to bring excitement to the series.

We can also look forward to the performance of the voice cast including Maaya Sakamoto, who will keep on voicing Motoko. Ghost in the Shell is celebrating its 25th anniversary from the birth of Masamune Shirow’s original manga, and this spring, it’s likely to gather a great amount of attention.

Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture

Series Composer Tow Ubukata on the TV Series Adaptation:
“The deeper you dig into Shirow’s manga, the more discoveries you make. The excellent stage settings themed on a period where countries are just about to disappear. His skillfulness in distributing the characters. The charms of the cyborg & cyber detective genre. I started working on this script thinking that this quarter-of-a-century-old masterpiece shouldn’t be treated as a “classic” slumbering in a museum. Instead, it should be adapted as a modern piece. In order to do that, it was necessary to depict the younger days of Motoko and the other members.

Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture is a new TV series that features the rearranged versions of Borders 1-4 (screened at theaters until end of last year) with the addition of new episodes. In accordance with the characteristics of this media, TV, the series will start from the episodes of Border 4, where all the familiar characters are lined up, and finally explains why the members of Section 9 gathered together in the first place. And the last, a new episode will show the confrontation between Motoko Kusanagi and Pyromania, a virus follower infected by the ‘Fire Starter.’ His thoughts on ‘individuality’ are vastly different from Motoko’s.

During my participation in this project, I was thinking about why the super strong members of Section 9 are following Motoko. I think it’s because they understand that she intuitively displays ‘logic in the age of confusion.’ In an age where the parallelization of nations and people on the Internet is being more and more prevalent, the original manga’s Motoko is concerned about the concept of ‘individuality.’ The light her presence emits draws people toward her.

The New Movie, set to release in early summer, will also revolve around Motoko, getting closer to her past and inner world. I think that in Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture, which depicts the process of how the members of Public Security Section 9 got together, we managed to create something that has a good flow for people who are new to Ghost in the Shell. For conventional fans, however, I’d be happy if you could enjoy it as the fourth Ghost in the Shell following in the steps of the original manga, the movies, and Stand Alone Complex.”
