As of Jan. 8, the details of the new Ghost in the Shell full-length feature film that was announced in September 2014 have been made public. The movie will be released in Japan nationwide in early summer 2015, under the official title Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie. Along with these details came the release of the movie poster, as well as the first of the movie’s news update reports. The poster illustration features a style very characteristic of Ghost in the Shell, with the movie’s main character Motoko Kusanagi in the center, and an art style overflowing with unique cyberpunk flavor. The news update was approximately 15 seconds in length and centered around the same scene presented in the movie poster illustration. The update was also publicized at the theater venue on Jan. 9.
What the fans are perhaps most interested in, however, is of course the plot. Although the details of the story were not announced at this time, the film will unveil the secret of Motoko Kusanagi’s birth. The very origins of the mobile armored riot police will also touched on, making this new movie a definite must-see for any Ghost in the Shell fan.
Furthermore, the movie itself is designed so that not only current fans of Ghost in the Shell, but those who have not watched the series before, too, can fully understand and enjoy the movie. Twenty five years after the birth of the series, this movie marks a new starting point for Ghost in the Shell.
Handling the animation of this new film is a studio that everyone is familiar with, Production I.G. The main director and character designer is Kazuchika Kise, the scriptwriter is Tow Ubukata, and the music is being handled by Cornelius. The staff who worked on Ghost in the Shell: Arise, released almost two years ago in June 2013, have been reassembled for the production of this movie. Stationed at other positions we have Kazuya Nomura from celebrated titles such as Robotics;Notes and Sengoku Basara 2 as director, and Toru Okubo as main animation director. It seems like this team will pack a new style of creativity into Ghost in the Shell.
Furthermore, in the movie’s cast we have, as Motoko Kusanagi, the same voice actress from Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Maaya Sakamoto, and several more renowned names, including Ikkyu Juku, Kenichiro Matsuda, Tarusuke Shingaki, Shunsuke Sakuya, Takuro Nakakuni, Yoji Ueda, Kazuya Nakai, and Miyuki Sawashiro. The plot of the new movie is expected to be connected with that of Ghost in the Shell: Arise. All shall be revealed upon the movie’s release in early summer 2015!
