Ajinomoto General Foods, a company known for “AGF Coffee Gifts” has announced a new form of anime on Dec. 19. It’s titled Latte Motion, and it’s the first anime to use latte.
Latte Motion is an anime short that was made using 1,000 cups of stencil latte art. Stencil latte art is a form of latte art in which you draw using a paper template called a stencil and sprinkle instant coffee or cocoa powder through it.
Late Motion is the title of the anime, and at the same time, it’s also the name of the anime production project. This is the first to challenge making an animation using popular Japanese latte art, an art form in which Japanese are world champions.
The animation was created using 1,000 cups of latte, which they recorded one by one and joined together, taking three days in the studio. The food coordinator carefully poured the latte then sifted cocoa powder through the stencil. Unlike anime, they repeated the same action 1,000 times instead of drawing, which is a pretty overwhelming task. They also used more than 300 stencils.
The story follows a couple walking through life from their childhood years to old age, depicted in 90 seconds. The cute direction employing sweets makes this piece a hand-drawn animation filled with a kind of warmth that couldn’t be expressed through CG.
A video about its making was released as well. You can see how the food coordinator actually creates the latte art and how he beautifully fixes the illustrations. It’s the work of a master. You’ll feel warm after watching the anime, and have a craving for latte, no doubt.
