On Sept. 30, a lineup announcement was held for the 27th Tokyo International Film Festival to take place in Toranomon Hills, Tokyo. During the announcement, the screening date of Appleseed Alpha (subtitled version), which was previously announced to be screened at the festival as a special invitation work, was revealed.
The screening will take place at Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills SC2 on Oct. 28 at 15:45. This will be the film’s Asia premiere and the first time it is screened in Japan. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 11. It was also revealed at the announcement that director Shinji Aramaki will be attending the film festival. He will likely be seen on the red carpet and at the screening.
Appleseed Alpha is a CG animation based on Masamune Shirow’s masterpiece sci-fi manga. It is also the newest work by director Shinji Aramaki who is known for Appleseed, Space Pirate Captain Harlock and other CG animation films. Because both the series and director are highly popular overseas as well, the work was compiled in English first. This subtitled version will be screened at TIFF.
Also syncing up with the film festival, the cast of the Japanese dubbed version has been announced. The two main characters, Deunan and Briareos, will be voiced by Yuka Komatsu and Junichi Suwabe, respectively. And the two who get caught in their trouble, Iris and Olson, will be voiced by Aoi Yuki and Hiroki Takahashi, respectively. Other members of the talented cast include Kaori Nazuka, Tochi Hiroki, Tessho Genda, and Katsunosuke Hori.
The story is set in a New York completely in ruins after a world war. Deunan and her lover Briareos save two people who call themselves Alice and Olson from being attack by automatic weapons, and they become connected to a fight to protect the hope of humanity. The main theme for this new CG animation was created by Yasutaka Nakata (Capsule), and the movie is packed with highlights. Look forward to its release countrywide in Japan after its screening at TIFF.
