New Initial D the Movie: Legend 1 - Awakening has gotten off to a great start since its countrywide release in Japan on Aug. 23. Its 2-day opening weekend totals for the 30 theaters it is playing in are 32,925,680 yen at the box office and 25,537 tickets sold. According to the distributor, this means that the film has entered the ballpark of being able obtain 200 million yen in box office revenue, and now they are aiming for 300 million yen. Considering that tickets to the movie have been set at 1,300 yen, which is lower than other movies, this number is surprising.
A secret to its success is its wide support, from couples to families. Also, excluding urban areas, 57% of audiences are comprised of locals. Exhibiting particular strength in this area is the North Kanto region. Here, the ratio of locals is high. In particular, the movie was ranked first place even among other masterpieces at Movix Isesaki in Gunma Prefecture, where the series is set. It is also ranked first at Movix Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture.
New Initial D the Movie is the talked-about new animated movie adaptation based on Shuichi Shigeno’s popular manga Initial D. The adaptation will be developed into a trilogy. The title of the second movie, New Initial D the Movie: Legend 2 - Tousou, has also already been revealed in theaters. Because the first movie is a hit, anticipation is already building for the next movie. The release date for this has also already been determined. It will release in early summer 2015.
