The last volume of Groundworks - Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo will release on Aug. 22. The large A4-size, 384-page, full color art book is comprised of several thousand illustrations. It costs 3,700 yen excluding tax.
Art books on the Rebuild of Evangelion series have been published since the first movie, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. They are published directly by Khara, the animation studio behind the films, and have become popular for introducing the charms of this huge hit series. This publication comes a year and a half after the release of the film in November 2012 and has been carefully created just like the film. Because of that, there is huge anticipation that the book will have dense content.
The book is packed with fascinating original drawings from the Rebuild of Evangelion series, which is said to be the current pinnacle of animation. The book is comprised of original drawings and layouts from the second half of the film up to the climax. Many talked-about scenes are included. For the publication, several thousand original drawings were scanned and carefully retouched one by one. Because of this, the textures of the colored pencils used for the original drawings are even reproduced. Hence, there is no doubt that the animators’ newest techniques and styles will be conveyed.
In addition to this art book being sold in bookstores, it will also be sold at the Evangelion Store. Currently, pre-orders are being accepted on the Evangelion Store’s online shop. The first 1,000 people to pre-order will receive special postcards of original artwork as a bonus.
This original art book series by Khara can be enjoyed by anyone as a collection of illustrations. On the other hand, they are also being produced as teaching material for those seeking professional knowledge and those aiming to break into the anime industry. The series’ characteristic is its uncompromising quality.
The introduction to these original drawings doesn’t stop with just this book, however. An exhibit called “Evangelion Exhibition” focusing on original drawings started in Matsuya Ginza in the summer of 2013. This exhibit is currently touring around Japan. It began being held at the Hankyu Umeda Gallery in Osaka on June 25, and it will return to Tokyo beginning on July 19 when it will be held at the Sogo Art Museum in Yokohama. After this, the exhibit is scheduled to tour Takamatsu, Ube, and Kumamoto.
