Since the start of the TV broadcast in 2005, a series that has been prominent in the Japanese tokusatsu genre due to its unique world and elaborate story is Garo. The series used stylish video created by genius director Keita Amemiya using the latest CG and VFX technology. Fans were given a big surprise in November 2013 when an anime adaptation of the series was greenlit. The title of the anime, Garo: Honoo no Kokuin, and visual were released at the large anime event AnimeJapan 2014 held in March, and it was announced that the anime would begin broadcasting this fall.
Since AnimeJapan 2014, no new information had been released for the work, but that all changed on June 20 when the Garo event “Garo Creator’s Knight” was held. For the first time, a teaser and visual for Garo: Honoo no Kokuin were released. A point to notice is that the previous unreleased characters are each depicted. The visual shows a young man who is thought to be the main character, Golden Knight Garo, holding a large sword up to the sky. Around him are three other characters. A close-up of this young man is also shown in the roughly 50-second teaser.
For fans familiar with other anime series to date, the animation has such a different flavor it’s surprising. And although the anime takes place in the same world as previous works in the series, we were told that it has an entirely new story.
On the other hand, the emblem familiar to the series is also depicted in the teaser. The Makai Knights visual will likely be understood by fans. This new anime will also widen the world of Garo.
Directing the anime is newcomer Yuichiro Hayashi. In charge of series composition and scriptwriting is Yasuko Kobayashi who has worked on anime and tokusatsu shows previously, including Attack on Titan and the previous Garo series. Producing the anime is Mappa, which also produced Kids on the Slope. For details on the characters and story and information on the cast, we’ll have to wait for a follow-up report.
