“Silver Spoon” Episode 4 Recap: "Hachiken Makes Pizza"

The many joys of making pizza.

Hachiken was confident in his midterm grades before he notices that his classmates all received 100 points in their various areas of expertise. Although Hachiken is still No. 1 overall, he's just not satisfied. During campus cleanup, Hachiken stumbles upon an old brick oven. While doing some research into brick ovens on the school computer, he mumbles to himself, "I could make pizza with this." At this, his classmates get excited, and exclaim they have never had genuine pizza before. It appears that in Hokkaido, pizza delivery is not available outside of the urban areas.

Hachiken somehow becomes in charge of making pizza for everyone, but he soon realizes that it is going to cost more than expected. But this is Ezono. With the help of his classmates, He gathers all the necessary ingredients like flour and cheese from inside the school. Hachiken can't let anyone down once he's been given a responsibility; that's an admirable part of his personality. One of his superiors helps fix the broken brick oven, Hachiken's classmates aid in gathering firewood, and the number of participants steadily increases. Everyone pitches in to help "nice guy Hachiken."

When acquiring the last ingredient, bacon, from upperclassman Inada, Hachiken is asked whether he'll be able to eat the pig he is raising now for his practicum. Hachiken responds that he won't know until the time comes. However, the bacon from Inada that he tastes turns out to be extremely delicious.

The day of the pizza bake finally arrives. Everyone from the school that helped out gathers around in what turns out to be a big event. Now it's time for them to taste their first homemade pizza. It turns out to be so delicious that Hachiken suddenly bursts out laughing. That's right, when something tastes this good, you can't help but laugh.

From this, Hachiken realizes the joy of eating together with everyone. The underlying lesson is about the importance of local production and consumption. At Ezono, the students have fun while dealing with real-world issues, becoming responsible adults in the process.
