An exhibition introducing the worlds of works by director Makoto Shinkai, who has captured the hearts of many fans through his works, will be held in Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture. The “Makoto Shinkai Exhibit - Kimi wa Kono Sekai no, Hanbun” will start on June 28 at the Ooka Makoto Kotoba Museum. The appearance of his work and the messages in them will be conveyed along with moldings of words. The exhibit will be filled with content, including a video documenting the making of the exhibit.

The Ooka Makoto Kotoba Museum is managed by ZKAI. Director Makoto was in charge of creating ZKAI’s commercial “Crossroad” which supports students preparing for college entrance exams and was released this past February. There was a huge reaction to “Crossroad” after it released, inviting sympathy from not just those in their teens, but from a wide range of age groups. Until now, the ZKAI Group has searched for the possibility of “words” based on the spirit of poet Makoto Ooka at the Ooka Makoto Kotoba Museum. They took notice of director Shinkai as an originator of new “words” in the world of animation, and this is tied to the decision to hold this exhibit.

The exhibit will shine a light on four of director Makoto’s works, which, in addition to “Crossroad,” includes “Their Standing Points,” an early representative work first announced as an independent work; 5 Centimeters Per Second, which is especially popular among fans; and the 2013 film that caused a huge stir, The Garden of Words. The venue will be divided into four sections, one for each work, and storyboards and original drawings will be introduced. The layer constructions of scenes from the works will also be displayed in 3D. There is no doubt that this is a chance for fans to learn his production process. A video looking at the making of an original poster drawn for the exhibit will also be screened. Furthermore, molds of memorable dialog from his work and lyrics from the theme song of “Crossroad” will also be displayed to bring attention to the “words” using in Shinkai’s work. There will also be the shoes designed by main character Takao in The Garden of Words and the letter given to Takaki by Akari in 5 Centimeters Per Second. It will be an irresistible atmosphere for fans.

The venue of the exhibit, Ooka Makoto Kotoba Museum, is a bit removed from the city center of Mishima, but it’s a convenient location that’s about a 1-minute walk from JR Tōkaidō Main Line and Tōkaidō Shinkansen Mishima Station. It may also be a good idea to try going during the weekend.

The exhibit will run from June 28 to Oct. 19. It’s hours are 10:00 to 18:00 and it is closed on Mondays. (However, during holidays the exhibit will be open Mondays and closed the following day.) Tickets are 1,000 yen for adults, 750 yen for college students, and 500 yen for elementary and middle school students. For more details, you can check the Ooka Makoto Kotoba Museum’s official site.
