Every year, Sanrio holds its original character popularity poll, the Sanrio Character Ranking, and this year as well many characters have entered. This time we’ll be introducing one such character named My Sweet Piano.
My Sweet Piano is a female sheep whose charming point is her fluffy baby pink fur. She was introduced as My Melody’s friend, and she was at first called Hitsuji-san. However, Sanrio collected named through its monthly publication Ichigo Shimbun in 2005 and the resulting name was Piano-chan. Character goods began being developed under the name My Sweet Piano in 2008.
This gentle and pampered girl loves to talk with My Melody while picking flowers in a field and is a character who doesn’t stand out in a grand way. She is positioned, so to speak, as a support character, so she’s had few chances to publicize. However, she is liked by a great many My Melody fans.
There is an episode that is indispensable in talking about her. This happened during the 2013 Sanrio Character Ranking. Piano, who had entered the contest for the first time, made the following public pledge: “It’ll be a bit scary, but if I make it below No. 80, I’ll shave my fur!” To a sheep, shaving off their fur is equivalent to getting naked, and there hasn’t ever before been a Sanrio character who shaved their body.
We’re not sure if her steadfast resolution is the reason, but Piano-chan is putting up a valiant effort this year and is ranked at No. 16. Another achievement is her successful debut this year at Sanrio Puroland, a Sanrio character theme park in Tokyo. New Piano-chan products will also be released in June. It’s safe to say Piano-chan isn’t just a support character anymore. Keep an eye on Piano-chan’s ranking this year.
