Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary Main Theme Song to Be Created by X Japan’s Yoshiki

Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary, a theatrical movie adaptation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Masami Kurumada’s hugely popular Saint Seiya, will have a countrywide roadshow release in Japan on June 21. It has now been announced that Yoshiki from the popular rock band X Japan will be creating the movie’s theme song.

The title of the theme song is “Hero (Yoshiki Classical Version)” and it is sung by Katie Fitzgerald, female vocalist of the music group Violet UK which Yoshiki is the lead of. A reason for this decision is the synchronization between the work, which will be released worldwide, and Yoshiki’s global activities. This collaboration between Yoshiki, who will soon begin a 10-country, 13-stop solo world tour called “Yoshiki Classical World Tour 2014,” and Saint Seiya, which is picking up tremendous support worldwide, will likely be very popular. A trailer of the theme song has been uploaded to YouTube, so you can hear it while seeing clips of the movie.

Saint Seiya was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) from 1985-90. The TV anime began only nine months after the start of serialization, which is unusually fast, and became loved by many fans due to the charming characters and the variety of special moves used by the Saints. The series is even hugely popular overseas. There are more than 34.4 million copies of the original manga in print, and the TV anime has broadcast in more than 80 countries including France, Italy, and Brazil.

Comment from Yoshiki:
I’m very honored to be able to create this theme song to Saint Seiya. Though I’m saying so myself, I was able to write a heart-clenching song with a hero motif and a very pretty melody. Of course, I know of Saint Seiya, and I actually love anime, so I said that I would certainly do it. I saw the manga a long time ago, and I was shown it before creating this song; it has an amazing sense of scale. I was also really nervous about what kind of song would match, and instead of doing an intense song, I dared to write a ballad. I think it matches the wonderful sense of scale that Saint Seiya has. From here on, I will be holding my 10-country, 13-stop solo world tour “Yoshiki Classical,” and I think I’ll include it there as well.
