The aggregate results of the Ota-Q held on the TOM Facebook page between Jan. 5-11 are finally in! This time, a total of 915 people from around the world responded (of these, 795 were valid responses).
Among the total 275 titles voted on, shining in the No. 1 spot on the overall ranking was Anohana! It seems many related to this heartbreaking adolescent story of loss. Coming in at No. 2 with only one vote less was Angel Beats. Many fans were most likely pushed over the edge to tears by Hinata’s passionate speech to Yui.

Two works in the Clannad series took the third and fourth spots. These two together totalled 183 votes, only a bit more than the 119 cast for Anohana.
The female Top 10 ranking included in addition to Naruto and One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist at fifth place and Fruits Basket, Attack on Titan, and other anime spawned from manga tied for 10th place. On the male ranking, works chosen were adapted not just from manga, but games, light novels, and a wide range of other media as well.

In addition to differences between the genders, there were also differences among different geographies and demographics, though none of these were big enough to truly stand out. It seems that tearjerker anime are pretty common worldwide, regardless of age or gender! It’s deeply moving to think that people worldwide are shedding tears over the same anime.
