Japacon TV #13: Part 3 Introduction

Japacon TV is a show that introduces Japanese subcultures such as anime and Vocaloid and broadcasts at 24:00 every Friday on the Japanese satellite broadcast channel BS Fuji. This episode is titled “Dream Collaborations Between Anime and Commercials?! The Frontlines of the Anime Advertisement Business.” It is themed after collaborations between anime production companies, creators, and the commercial industry. In this third part, we will introduce the collaborative Next A-Class commercial created by Mercedes-Benz, Production I.G, and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

How did such a dream collaboration come about? The person who first proposed the idea was Natsuo Satoh, executive creative director at Japanese advertising agency Hakuhodo. The staff, headed by Satoh, seeked to express a “groovy sense” through an animated commercial. This is because a sense of groove has a good-feeling rhythm and uplifting quality. The exhilarating sense born from groove fit with the sensation that anyone can feel when driving a car. The Next A-Class animation project advanced in order recreate this sense of groove thought up by the staff.

However, the highlights of this anime commercial aren’t just its sense of groove and exhilaration. An extremely detailed setting was created, and packed into it is an extensive amount of information to the point of being a stand-alone anime work.

Check out the commercial in the program or on the official site!
