The two-part sequel to the hit 2012 film Rurouni Kenshin, which made over 3 billion yen at the box office, will come out this summer. Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire will be released nationwide on Aug. 1, followed by the release of Rurouni Kenshin: The End of a Legend on Sept. 13.

A new promotional poster has been revealed. The poster features protagonist Kenshin Himura looking angry against the backdrop of the titular “Great Kyoto Fire,” with arch enemy Makoto Shishio behind him.

Takeru Satoh, who is continuing his role as Kenshin, revealed that he was amazed by the presence exuded by Tatsuya Fujiwara, who plays Shishio. Looking back at the filming, which took half a year, he said, “He was very convincing in making me think, ‘Man, this guy’s strong.’”

The enlarged image of Shishio on the poster also gives a powerful impact. What sort of deadly struggle will be unfurled by this successor to Kenshin, who does his work behind the scenes in Bakumatsu Kyoto? This promotional image makes it hard to wait for the summer release. Satoh and Fujiwara’s first ever appearance together is also something to look forward to.

The Great Kyoto Fire and The End of a Legend have already been getting attention as major releases for 2014. The teaser trailer released in December of last year has already reached over 1.2 million views. With new characters being shown, fans have voiced their passionate enthusiasm online, saying how soon they want to see it and how faithful it looks.

The films are a two-part adaptation of the popular “Kyoto arc” from the original manga. The film took on a large-scale location shooting schedule that spanned 11 different prefectures across Japan, traveling an overall total of 20,000 kilometers, or half the Earth’s circumference.

In addition to Satoh, cast members reprising their roles from the previous film include Emi Takei, Yū Aoi, Munetaka Aoki, and Yōsuke Eguchi. Director Keishi Ohtomo has also returned to lead the films to even greater success.
